What Does The Work-From-Home & Work-From-Office Split Look Like in 2025?

In 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, just 4.7% of UK employees worked from home. By April 2020, 46.6% of employees did at least partly work from home – with a large percentage of people either unable to work or having to work on-site, such as emergency service personnel.

This represented a MASSIVE increase in people WFH.

Whilst many of us weren’t aware of the specific figures involved at the time, the impact of the lockdowns was very much felt by employees and employers across a range of industries across the world.

It feels like the effects of the year 2020 would influence the way we see and engage in working life forever, but we wanted to go beyond instinct and analyse available data to get answers for these key questions:

“Are we still seeing the same level of WFH employment 5 years on?”

&

“If so, what does it mean for workspaces in 2025 and beyond?”

These answers are especially important for us because we specialise in providing office furniture and tailored workspace equipment to both business locations and working-from-home setups. We also offer office clearances and relocations to help facilitate the transition from on-site work to working from home, and vice versa.

We have explored what the figures look like halfway through the decade of the 2020s to help inform our clients and guide our business strategy accordingly and moving forward through the coming years. Read below to find out more!

The Evolving Workplace in 2025

According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and various labour market surveys, the UK workforce in 2025 remains a hybrid mix of home and office-based roles. The split is now levelling into a steady rhythm after several years of fluctuation.

  • 40–45% of UK workers now work remotely at least some of the time.
  • Of that group, around 15% work remotely full-time, while the rest operate on a hybrid basis, typically 2–3 days per week in the office.
  • Sectors with the highest remote working rates include technology, finance, marketing, and professional services.

Meanwhile, industries such as manufacturing, construction, education, and healthcare have largely returned to on-site or location-based work due to the nature of their roles.

What This Means for Office Space

This shift has had a tangible impact on how businesses use their office space. Demand for large, full-time office premises has declined significantly, with many companies choosing to:

  • Downsize their office footprint to reduce overheads.
  • Implement hot desking and flexible layouts to accommodate hybrid workers.
  • Invest in shared workspaces or co-working hubs.
  • Reconfigure spaces to promote collaboration when teams are physically present.

According to a 2024 report by the British Council for Offices, over 58% of UK businesses have restructured or reduced their office space post-pandemic, while over 70% say they plan to redesign their workplaces to suit hybrid working models.

As a result, we believe in catering to all workspace options for our clients old and new.
